When postpartum meets perimenopause (and nobody talks about it)

In Today's Issue:

  • Why the medical system fails women experiencing multiple transitions simultaneously
  • The dangerous trend of quick-fix solutions for complex problems
  • How we did with the opening of the fall cohort for the Postpartum Nutrition Certification Program!

This week's podcast episode highlighted something troubling: how the medical system's compartmentalized approach leaves women caught between transitions completely unsupported.

When postpartum meets perimenopause, which is happening more as women have babies later, and the overlapping symptoms create confusion that leads to inadequate care.

Listen: Why Quick Fixes Aren't Working →

Here's what struck me most about this conversation: the focus on treating symptoms rather than understanding root causes.

Whether someone is postpartum, perimenopausal, or both, the standard approach remains the same: medicate first, investigate later (if at all).

But these transitions represent profound physiological changes that require comprehensive understanding, not always (but sometimes) quick pharmaceutical solutions.

Women experiencing overlapping transitions need providers who understand:

  • How stress compounds hormonal disruption across life phases
  • Why nutritional depletion affects every system during transitions
  • How sleep, support, and nervous system regulation form the foundation for recovery
  • When lifestyle interventions can address root causes before considering pharmaceuticals

The conversation about hormone therapy and antidepressants misses the crucial question: What underlying imbalances are creating these symptoms in the first place?

This episode reminded me why I ended with this challenge: Do your own research.

Don't accept surface-level explanations for complex transitions. Don't assume quick fixes address root causes. Don't let the medical system's fragmented approach become your standard of care.

Your clients deserve providers who dig deeper than symptom management to understand the physiological story their bodies are telling.
