📣 New ACOG Prenatal Guidelines Are Here… But Are They Enough?
There’s been a long-awaited update in the world of prenatal care—and it’s making headlines. A new set of guidelines, “Tailored Prenatal Care Delivery for Pregnant Individuals,” just landed, calling for more personalized, flexible, and evidence-based approaches to prenatal visits. 🎉
Yes, it’s a win. 🏆
But let’s be honest—this is barely scratching the surface.
Here’s what’s new:
- More flexibility in visit frequency based on risk factors and need.
- Recognition of virtual care as a legitimate visit (about time!).
- Emphasis on shared decision-making to reduce unnecessary interventions.
- Some conversation about health equity and how care should be individualized, especially for marginalized communities.
It’s a step forward—no question.
But here’s the problem: it's still built on the same old foundation.
👉 No mention of nutritional needs or depletion.
👉 No inclusion of trauma-informed or nervous system-supportive models.
👉 Still zero integration of functional health markers like inflammation, sleep, or postpartum planning.
👉 And, let’s be real—it could take years (even decades) before this becomes standard practice in most OB offices.
This update is like giving a crumbling house a new coat of paint—it might look better on paper, but the cracks remain underneath.
Mamas and providers alike deserve more than visit schedules and telehealth options. We need full-body, root-cause, culturally-aware care that sees the whole woman—not just her uterus.
✨ That’s why at Postpartum University®, we’re not waiting for the system to catch up.
Our trainings, tools, and certifications (like the Perinatal Mental Health Training) are built to go beyond the guidelines—because mothers need better, right now.
Let’s celebrate progress—but let’s also demand more. 💪

🚨 Postpartum, Birth Control & Depression: The Study You Need to Know
This conversation struck a nerve—and for good reason.
When I first shared the now-viral study linking postpartum hormonal birth control to a 49% increased risk of depression, my inbox exploded. Emails poured in from mothers saying, "This explains everything." "Why didn't anyone tell me?" "I thought I was losing my mind."
The truth is, postpartum birth control has long been treated as standard, default care. But what if it’s actually contributing to the very symptoms it’s supposed to help prevent?
In this week’s podcast episode, I take a deep dive into the JAMA Network Open study of over 610,000 first-time mothers—and the massive implications it has for mental health, physiology, and how we define care in the postpartum season.
And I go beyond the research. We talk:
The Postpartum Brain: How it's literally rewiring for connection and survival—and how hormonal birth control can disrupt that.
The Biology of Breakdown: From inflammation to nutrient depletion to serotonin interference, we map exactly what happens in the body when synthetic hormones are layered on top of postpartum recovery.
Systemic Failures: Why most providers don’t know this (and why it’s not their fault)—but it is their responsibility to learn more.
What to Do Instead: Real, nourishing alternatives to help you support women in body and mind without suppressing their natural healing.
👉 This is one of the most important conversations I’ve ever had. If you’re a provider, parent, or advocate, you need to hear this.

Let’s stop confusing default care with actual healing. Let’s lead with truth, not convenience. And let’s finally give mothers the whole picture.
